Finish also locks R3 Motorsports in for first five races in 2011
HOMESTEAD, Fla. (November 21, 2010) – Robert Richardson, Jr. and the No. 23 Chevrolet of R3 Motorsports closed out the 2010 season in admirable fashion with a 20th-place finish at Homestead-Miami Speedway on Saturday. And, in the process, moved up one position in the Owner’s Points to 27th solidifying their top-30 lock for the first five races for next season.
Right from the start of the 200-lap race, Richardson quickly made his move up through the field. By lap 14, he had already earned 12 spots and was in the top-30 scoring positions. Through some early pit stops, the call from the pit box was track bar and air pressure adjustments to alleviate a tight condition through turns 3 and 4.
Once that was fixed, Richardson kept on the gas and continued to battle for positions as his Chevrolet got better and better. The only deterrent was in the middle portion of the race when a decision to put on scuff tires to fix the tight condition didn’t work out as intended.
The result was a loss of positions and Richardson going down a lap by the 130th circuit. However, with two, three and four-wide racing on restarts to bring out more cautions, Richardson was able to take advantage of the free pass rule and get back to racing with the leaders for a lap-149 restart in 29th place.
From there, Richardson took advantage of the new tires and started picking off other cars to move up the scoring pylon. Electing to run the high side of the track worked to his advantage because it allowed him to use momentum as he came off the corners to pass most of those cars.
Through three cautions in the last 50 laps, Richardson was able to maintain his top-20 position and take the checkered flag in 20th. This was a great way to close out the season for R3 Motorsports as they moved up one position in the Owner’s Points to finish out the season in 27th place.
This will guarantee the No. 23 Chevrolet will automatically start the first five races in 2011 because it’s in the top-30 Owner’s Points.
Robert Richardson, Jr. quotes: “This was a great way to end our year. We were up there in 15th for a little while, but those late cautions allowed some of the leaders to pit for fresher tires and we lost a few. But, we were able to rally back and get us a top-20 finish.
“This was one of the best cars I’ve had in awhile and I really enjoyed racing the way we did tonight. I appreciate everyone’s efforts this year. I wish we had more runs like this, but it was great to close it out and give us something to work off of for next year.”
